Loyd Star sweeps McLaurin in division

FLORENCE — Rickey Barnes collected a double-double, scoring 28points and grabbing 12 rebounds Friday night to help the Loyd StarHornets to a 67-38 Division 6-2A win over the McLaurin Tigers.Barnes also blocked 2 shots.

In the girls game, sophomore center Haley Sones fired in agame-high 20 points to spark the Lady Hornets in a 45-28 victoryover the Lady Tigers.

The Hornets improved to 11-6 on the season and 3-2 in divisionplay. The Lady Hornets pushed their division record to 3-2 andimproved to 13-4 overall.

Loyd Star 67, McLaurin 38

“It was one of our better games of the year,” said Loyd Starboys coach Gene (Moochie) Britt. “It was an all out teameffort.”

Loyd Star led 12-7 in the first quarter but broke open the gamein the second with an 18-13 run to take a 30-20 lead athalftime.

In the final frame, McLaurin went to a full-court press and LoydStar took advantage for a 21-7 run to secure the win.

“In the fourth quarter, they went to man-to-man,” explainedBritt. “We beat their press and got some good shots. I was verypleased with the team effort.”

Ron Jones fired in 11 points, pulled down 7 rebounds and had 4assists for the Hornets. Glenn Thomas netted 10 points. Pullingdown 8 rebounds was McKinley Hamilton.

Donnell White paced McLaurin with 13 points.

Loyd Star 45, McLaurin 28

The Lady Hornets overcame a sluggish 7-2 lead in the firstquarter and went on a 17-8 run in the second to take a 24-10 leadover the Lady Tigers at halftime. In the second half, Loyd Starcontinued to outscore McLaurin 21-18 for the win.

Once we got started, we started playing well,”said Loyd Star girls coach Jan Delaughter. “We have to startplaying four quarters of basketball.”

Shannon Chester fired in 8 points, pulled down 10 rebounds, made8 steals and had 2 assists. Emily Vaughn followed with 7 points, 3rebounds, 2 steals and an assist.

McLaurin got 11 points from Tiffany Brown. Macy Brown finishedwith 10 points.
