Lady Wolves rip Lady Bulldogs

UTICA – The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolvescontinued their winning ways Thursday night in Hinds’ J.D. BoydGymnasium. Even though the tenth-ranked Lady Wolves played inspurts, they were able to get an 80-58 South division win over theHinds Community College Lady Bulldogs on the Utica campus.

Co-Lin improves to 16-1 overall and a perfect 6-0 in the MACJC’sSouth division, while Hinds falls to 4-12 and 0-6.

Co-Lin travels to Ellisville to take on Jones County CommunityCollege Monday in an important MACJC South division match-up, whileHinds hosts Southwest Monday.

Neither team set the nets on fire in the opening half of play.Co-Lin shot 43 percent from the field on 12-of-28, while Hinds was8-of-26 for a 22-percent clip. An offense, that was inconsistent attimes, was concern for Lady Wolves head coach Gwyn Young in thefirst half.

“We did not execute at times on offense,” said Young. “We weretrying to run and shoot, instead of running our offense.”

The Lady Wolves used a balanced scoring attack on offense in theopening half. Alisha Mason, a 5-foot-9 freshman from Ruth, pumpedin 10 first-half points. Hanna Porter had 9 at the halftime break.Co-Lin held a 15-point advantage on a pair of occasions.

“We played well in spurts,” added Young.

In the second half, Hinds opened by hitting 7-of-10 shots. Theproblem was Co-Lin was matching Hinds point-for-point. The LadyWolves began to flow more frequently in their offense; taking a7149 lead with 7:20 left in the game on a free throw by sophomoreNikki Williams.

Young’s ballclub placed 5 Lady Wolves in double-figures, led byPorter with 18 points (4 treys), 4 steals and 3 assists. EricaTrahan followed with 16 points, 12 rebounds, 3 steals and 4assists. Mason and Williams each had 11 points. Williams had 2steals and 3 assists. Whitney Scott tossed in 10.

Hinds, coached by Carl Palmer, Jr., got 14 points from AprylTrimble. Deaundria Singleton had 12 points. Tiffany Hill had 6rebounds, while Chiquita Harrison grabbed 5 rebounds. Kayla Palmerdished out 3 assists. The Lady Bulldogs started 5 freshmen for thegame; and their youthfulness showed at times.

Co-Lin outscored Hinds 44-31. The Lady Bulldogs committed 21turnovers, while the Lady Wolves had 17.
