Residents are encouraged to come early Thursday if they want toparticipate in annual tree sale at the Army National Guard armoryon Highway 84.
The trees, priced from $1 to $5, are not expected to lastlong.
“Last year, we were rid of all the trees by 9:15 a.m.,” saidLynn Richardson, a volunteer and event organizer for the NationalResources Conservation Service. “You can’t beat these prices. Youjust can’t.”
Volunteers will begin selling the trees at 7:30 a.m., butRichardson suggested people begin to line up at 7 a.m. to takeadvantage of the opportunity.
“If they’re not here in line, they won’t get much,” she said. “Ithink we still have people recovering from (Hurricane) Katrina whoare replacing lost trees.”
Trees for sale include dogwoods, weeping willows, southernmagnolias and a variety of oaks, maples, birches and crepe myrtles, among others. A selection of various fruit trees are also forsale.
A limited number of loblolly pine saplings will also beavailable, Richardson said. Demand for the free pines is usuallyhigh.
“They’re usually the quickest to go because they are free,” shesaid. “We don’t limit the number people can have if they’rereasonable.”
Richardson said volunteers will end the event around 11 a.m. iftrees remain. However, the trees have all been sold by 9:30 a.m. inthe past few years.
