Dickerson’s late shot lifts BA over Copiah

GALLMAN — Corey Dickerson scored the game winning-shot as timeexpired, lifting the Brookhaven Academy Cougars nipped the hostCopiah Academy Colonels 38-36 Saturday night for the MPSA South AAchampionship. The game was tied at 36-all before the shot was madeand appeared headed for overtime.

Cougar David Ross Barnett’s shot bounced off the rim and intoDickerson’s hands who quickly nailed the game-winning fieldgoal.

“It was a sweet, sloppy South State AA championship,” saidBrookhaven Academy boys coach Dale Watts. “I thought our guys did atremendous job after T-Boy (Lynch) fouled out. Daniel Lofton did anexcellent job of keeping us in the game after Lynch fouledout.”

Brookhaven, the No. 1 boys and girls seeds out of the South,will host the State AA Tournament this week, beginning Tuesday. TheBrookhaven boys will face Canton and the girls battle Winston, theNo. 4 seeds out of the North. No. 2 seeded Copiah will meet theLeak boys and the Marshall girls. The teams will play eitherTuesday or Wednesday.

Selected to the South AA team from Brookhaven were BlaineRoberts, Lynch, Dickerson and Winborne. Representing Copiah wereBennett Wilson, Guess and Price.

In the consolation boys game, Central Private whipped BowlingGreen 71-45.

Brookhaven 38, Copiah 36

The Cougars (27-5) battled Coach Mitch Mitchell’s Colonels backand forth the entire game. Brookhaven and Copiah were tied 10-allafter the first quarter and 19-19 at the half. Going into the finalquarter, the teams were deadlocked at 31-31.

Dickerson led the Cougars with 13 points. Lynch, who fouled outlate in the fourth quarter, followed with 9 points, 4 steals and 5assists. Lofton led off the backboards with 12 rebounds. JoshWinborne followed with 5 rebounds.

Copiah got 11 points apiece from Jake Guess and Clay Price.Hunter Greer finished with 6 points.
