Rutland to meet district challengers

Incumbent Lawrence County District Three Supervisor CalvinRutland filed his qualifying papers Friday to seek re-election tohis post.
District Three has cast a wide net, drawing in a field of fourchallengers to date. John Bull, Eric King, Jerry Wayne Smithie andJerry L. Wallace have all entered the race to seek Rutland’soffice.
All of the District Three candidates are Democrats, which meansthe campaign will be decided in the party primary Aug. 7 unless aRepublican or Independent joins the race before the qualifyingdeadline March 1.
The 2007 elections include nearly all county and stateoffices.
Other recent qualifiers for Lawrence County offices include JayE. Maye and Willie Earl Smith for District Two supervisor, BillyBraswell for Post Two Justice Court judge and Edward May for PostTwo constable.
Maye and Smith will meet incumbent Billy Joe Boutwell in theDemocrat Party primary. Boutwell is also being challenged byIndependent Gloria O. Billiot, who will appear on the ballot in thegeneral election Nov. 6.
Braswell will campaign for the office of fellow Democrat andincumbent judge Donald G. “Donnie” Mullins.
May will join fellow Democrats Claude H. Wallace and BuddyWilson in a race for the Post Two constable post held by BradDavis, who has not qualified to seek re-election.
No candidate has qualified as a Republican.

* Sheriff: Incumbent Joel Thames, Duane R. “Doc” Bradford, HoytDampier and Charles White Jr.
* Circuit Clerk: James “Sandy” Brister, Patsy Bullock and StevenA. Moreman.
* Chancery Court Clerk: Incumbent Kevin Rayborn.
* Tax Assessor/Collector: Incumbent Sherry Hyde-Thames andTracey Foster Carney.
* Superintendent: Incumbent Russell Caudill, David A. “Tony”Davis and Tammy Givens Fairburn.
* Justice Court Judge, Post One: Incumbent Albert Turnage.
* Constable Post One: Incumbent Lessie Butler.
* Coroner: Incumbent Sidney Fortenberry and DereckPrestridge.
* County Attorney: Damond Ready.
