St. Al stuns Lady ‘Cats

SALEM — Sarah Kerut’s last-second layup lifted the St. AloysiusLady Flashes to a thrilling 55-54 Friday night win over the BogueChitto Lady ‘Cats in the championship finals of the Division 7-1ATournament. Kerut finished with a game-high 29 points, plus 7rebounds and 4 steals.
In the consolation game, West Lincoln beat Enterprise 44-36, ledby Hannah Knouse with 18 points and Kayla Moak with 12.
All four teams advance to the opening round of the SouthMississippi Class 1A playoffs, playing Monday night. Bogue Chittohosts Puckett and St. Al hosts South Leake, starting at 7 p.m.
West Lincoln and Enterprise are on the road as the Lady Bearsvisit Lake and the Lady Yellow Jackets invade Pisgah.
St. Al 55, Bogue Chitto 54
The Lady Flashes (21-8) avenged 2 earlier losses to Bogue Chittoduring the regular season. The got 12 points and 3 rebounds fromKatie Koestler.
“This was a very tough game for us,” said St. Al coach KytBonner. “Both teams played well. We were able to compete with BogueChitto and manage a win.”
The Lady ‘Cats (23-4) got 13 points and 10 rebounds from seniorforward Kimberlee Thomas. Guard Chelsey Miller added 11 points.Shasta Porter had 8 points and 7 rebounds.
“We were not ready to play tonight,” said BC coach ChristiTerrell. “We missed a lot of easy shots. St. Al hustled and neverquit. We must refocus and get ready for Monday.”
Terrell’s team had led St. Al 24-23 at halftime and carried a40-35 lead into the fourth quarter.
West Lincoln 44, Enterprise 36
The Lady Bears (13-15) broke a 23-23 halftime deadlock with a14-7, third-quarter run. The got 4 assists and 3 steals fromTatianna Marshall. Julie Case had 7 assists. Knouse and Kacey Smitheach had 5 rebounds.
“We picked up our defensive pressure and got some easy shots atthe end,” said West Lincoln coach Lane Young. “That was thedifference in the game.”
Senior center Lindsey Everett powered the Lady Jackets (10-18)with 17 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. Lacie Orr chippedin 7 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.
“We had too many turnovers,” said Enterprise coach Jill Nations.”We played hard but we missed some easy shots.”
