Residents of Lakewood Village were shocked Thursday whenlightning struck a neighborhood tree, but officials reported littleadditional damage from a storm front that blew through the countyThursday.

Bruce Bales, a resident of Lakewood Village, said thesubdivision sustained some minor damage.

“We had some big trees down and lightning struck a tree at myneighbor’s,” he said. “It just shattered it and blew the bark rightoff.”

Another neighbor, James and Cindy Chambers, had a “huge oak”topple in their backyard, Bales said.

“A trampoline was in the path of it. I’m not sure what else,” hesaid.

The most severe portion of the front passed through Brookhavenbetween 1:30 and 2 p.m., said Clifford Galey, Lincoln County CivilDefense director. It brought nickel- and dime-sized hail and windstopping just over 60 mph.

“I’m not sure how high the wind was but it was bad, and the hailwas tremendous,” Bales said. “It hailed the whole time it rained. It was banked along the house and stayed quite a while before itmelted.”

Damage reported to his office, however, was slight, Galey said. There were no reports of house damage or injuries resulting fromthe storm.

“It was isolated incidents – nothing major,” Galey said.

Two power lines were broken by falling limbs in the city andfive or six trees were reported down in the county, he said.

However, a fallen limb did damage one vehicle in the county, hesaid.

Brookhaven Police Chief Pap Henderson said a few trees fell inthe city, but no major damage was reported.

“We had a lot of water, but we didn’t get any complaints aboutflooding,” he said.

Overnight rains apparently softened the ground enough for a treeon Storm Avenue to fall and partially block the street around 7:30a.m. Friday, but there was little damage, Henderson said.

Ivy Gill, of Bogue Chitto, said he scarcely noticed theafternoon storm.

“It wet the ground a little, but that’s about all,” he said.

The forecast for today was scattered thunderstorms that shouldclear by evening, Galey said. No high winds or severe storms areexpected.
