Horace ‘Horse Cartwright’ Evans Jr.

Services for Horace “Horse Cartwright” Evans Jr., of Natchez,were 11 a.m. Sunday, May 19, at Morning Star Baptist Church,Jeannette Crossing, in Adams County, with burial in the churchcemetery. Marshall Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Evans, 60, died May 16, 2007, at Glenburney Nursing Home. Hewas born in Adams County on May 25, 1946, to Horace Evans Sr. andEthel Elizabeth Evans.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and his sister, MyrtleEvans.

Survivors are his daughter, Tiffany Evans, of Jackson; his son,Tamarcus Evans, of Perrytown; his sisters, Mabel M. Evans and MaryE. Rounds, both of Natchez; his brother, the Rev. Ruben Evans, ofNatchez; his two granddaughters; his four nieces and five nephews;five great-nieces, 12 great-nephews; and a host of other relativesand friends.

George Llellyen Mathas

Services for George Llellyen Mathas, of Wesson, formerly ofMetairie, La., are 11 a.m. Monday, May 21, at Leitz-Eagan FuneralHome, 4747 Veterans Memorial Boulevard in Metairie, with intermentin Lakelawn Park Mausoleum. A Masonic service will be held at 10:30a.m.

Visitation is Sunday from 5 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home,and on Monday from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.

Mr. Mathas passed away peacefully surrounded by family onThursday, May 17, 2007, at 8:11 a.m., at Mississippi BaptistMedical Center in Jackson. He was born in New Orleans, La., onMarch 21, 1933.

He was retired from South Central Bell Telephone Co. He was amember of the Masonic Lodge No. 417 Square and Compass for 46years. He served in the Korean Conflict as a United States MarineCorporal (Platoon Charlie), 1st Marine Division, and was honorablydischarged. He was a former member of Bridgedale BaptistChurch.

Preceding him in death were his wife of 29 years, Elsie QuarlesMathas; his infant son, George Llellyen Mathas Jr.; his grandson,Matthew Llellyen Heffner; his parents, George E. Mathas and WilleMay McCook; and his brother, Eugene H. Mathas.

Survivors are his wife, Verbalee Watts-Mathas, of Wesson; hisdaughters, Linda M. Loup, Brenda M. Heffner-McCaskell, Paula M.Nichelson; his stepdaughter, Sharon W. Robertson; his sons, GeorgeE. Mathas; his stepsons, Richie D. Watts and Michael Roy Watts; hisbrothers, Gary H. Mathas, Barry A. Mathas; his sisters, LolittaCompeaux and Loretta St. Pierre; and numerous grandchildren andgreat-grandchildren.

Arthur Curtis Munn

Services for Arthur Curtis Munn, of Jackson, are 11 a.m. Monday,May 21, at Rocky Hill Baptist Church in Wesson with burial in thechurch cemetery. Riverwood Family Funeral Service is in charge ofarrangements.

Mr. Munn, 85, died May 18, 2007, in Baker, La.

Visitation is Sunday from 5 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home,and on Monday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of theservice.

He was retired from Memphis Power and Light Company. He servedin the United States Army Infantry during World War II, and wasawarded the Purple Heart for his bravery during his time ofservice. He was involved in the invasion of Bayonne, France, wherehe participated in the liberation of a concentration campthere.  

Preceding him in death were his parents, Jim and Lillie MaeMunn; his wife, Sue S. Munn; his son, Jimmy White; his sister,Lillie Mae Kimble; and his brothers, James Lee Munn and Earnest”Herman” Munn.

Survivors are his son, John White, of Hernando; his daughters,Janneal Sue Kennedy, of Baker, La., and Angela J. Cannon, ofHickory Flat; and his grandchildren, Michael Kennedy, MarcusKennedy, Daryl Fourrox Jr., Jacob White, Nathanal White and JeremyScott.

Nola Ann Sterling

Services for Nola Ann Sterling, of Liberty, were 2 p.m.Saturday, May 19, at Whittington Memorial United Methodist Churchin Amite County with burial in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Sterling, 52, died May 16, 2007, at her residence. She wasborn in Louisiana on May 10, 1955.

Survivors are her loving and devoted husband, Timothy Sterling,of Liberty; her daughter, Debbie LaBalu; her sons, Chris LaBalu andAlex Ballard, all of Louisiana; her parents, Winneford and OllieStubblefield, of Louisiana; and a host of sisters, brothers,nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Veda Grace Wallace

Services for Veda Grace Wallace, of Bogue Chitto, will be heldat noon on Tuesday, May 22, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church inBogue Chitto with burial in the church cemetery. Mrs. Wallace, 75, died May 18, 2007, at her residence. She wasborn in Franklin County on Nov. 7, 1931, to Archie Freeman andJanie Grace (Graves) Freeman.

She was a homemaker. She was a member of Pleasant Grove BaptistChurch.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Marvin L.Wallace; her brothers, L.A. Freeman, Lee Freeman, Frank Freeman,Mervin Freeman and Roy Freeman; and her sisters, Pernie Arnold andLois Thornton.

Survivors are her sons, Roger L. Wallace, of Laguna Hills,Calif., Don M. Wallace and wife Janet, Alan Wallace and wifeMelissa, and Kenneth B. Wallace and wife Ronda, all of BogueChitto; her daughters, Kay Burns and husband Roe, of Brookhaven,and Norma Reeves and husband Richard, of Bogue Chitto; her sisters,Oma Lee Wallace and Georgia Mae Jordan, both of Bogue Chitto, andBillie Allred, of Smithdale; and her 25 grandchildren and 18great-grandchildren.
