Judge pushes for trial in 2004 slaying

Two murder suspects were allowed to remain free on bond aftertheir cases were reviewed in 14th District Circuit CourtMonday.

Judge Mike Taylor issued another continuance in the case againstKenneth Baggett Jr., of 2471 Lake Lincoln Dr., in the slaying ofconvenience store owner John Deere at the Airport Pik and Pak onOld Highway 51 in January 2004.

However, the judge set June 5 as the final day he would acceptmotions in the case and set a July 17 trial date. He also indicatedhe would not be inclined toward granting another continuance.

“It’s been more than three years and at some point this has togo to trial,” Taylor said.

Authorities believe Deere, 55, was shot between 4:30 and 4:45a.m. shortly after he arrived to start the business day. He wasfound in the store parking lot around 5 a.m. after officersresponded to an anonymous 911 call.

Baggett was arrested in June 2004, charged with the murder, andheld in jail until December 2006, when he was released under a$75,000 bond following a case review.

Across the hall in another courtroom, LaWanda Dillon, 30, of 631Booker Ave., pleaded not guilty to murder in the killing of32-year-old Boris E. Jackson.

Dillon is charged with running over Jackson with her car as hewalking down Turner Street late on the evening of Nov. 17,2006.

Judge David Strong said Dillon could continue to be free on a$50,000 bond, but barred her from any contact with Jackson’sfamily. Dillon and Jackson are believed to have been romanticallyinvolved at the time of the killing.
