HATTIESBURG — Laurel/Jones County defeated Lincoln County’sAll-Stars 11-1 Saturday morning in the opening round of the DixieBoys Baseball League 14s State Tournament. Lincoln County playsCarthage this morning at 11:30 in an elimination game.

Carthage lost a 9-7 squeaker to Mize Saturday.

There was no revenge for the Lincoln Countians who lost toLaurel/Jones County in the finals of last year’s 13s statetournament. The winners took an 8-0 lead before Lincoln Countyscored its only run in the fourth.

Winning pitcher Chase Ward handcuffed Lincoln County with a3-hitter. He struck out 10 batters and walked 3.

Tyler Case fanned 3 and walked 6 in a losing cause.

Lincoln County got singles from Calvin Robinson, Gabe Wilson andCase.

Directing Laurel/Jones County’s 12-hit attack was Matthew Farrarwho homered Benji Sullivan singled and doubled. Ben Stevens tripledand singled as his team exploded for 6, third-inning runs.

Wade Robertson doubled for the winners. Colby Prince, BradyMcBride, Derrick Byram, Darion Bester, Jonathon Glase and Wardsingled.
