Father honored for involvement at two schools

A Brookhaven father swept up Parent of the Year honors Tuesdaynight when he captured awards for two schools and later receivedthe nod as the Brookhaven School District’s overall top parent.
Nick Davis was chosen by the faculties at Brookhaven ElementarySchool and Mamie Martin Elementary School as their Parent of theYear for the 2006-2007 school year.
“Obviously, he shines for two different schools,” said DanitaHobbs, principal at Mamie Martin, when presenting the secondaward.
Others receiving Parent of the Year honors included FeliciaCrane at Lipsey Middle School, Missy Thames at Alexander JuniorHigh School, Paula McGowen at Brookhaven Technical Center andSaundra Shannon at Brookhaven High School.
Davis, a self-employed nursing home consultant, was embarrassedto be recognized for his deeds.
“I’m sorry. I don’t deserve this,” he told the other honorees.”I get more out of it than (the students) do.”
Pam Fern, principal at Brookhaven Elementary, said Davis was afixture at the school.
“It’s almost as if he’s part of the staff,” she said. “He’salways there.”
His son, Trevor Davis, is a student at BrookhavenElementary.
Davis said beginning in the fall he devoted each Friday toteaching music at Mamie Martin because “I want the children to havethe same experience I did as a child.”
Davis has also helped organize the school musical for the pastseveral years, Hobbs said. His daughter, Hannah Davis, willgraduate from Mamie Martin this year, he said.
“Selfishly, I hope they let me continue after this year,” hesaid.
