WESSON — On a hot, humid Saturday morning in Stone Stadium, theCo-Lin Wolves conducted their second scrimmage as a tune-up for the2007 football season.
“We were very slow today,” said Co-Lin head football coach GlennDavis after the scrimmage. “We had two linemen out attendingfunerals and three out with injuries.”
The Wolves were working with an officiating crew to help themfind any problems and fix them before their first game at Northweston Thursday, Aug. 30.
“Offensively, we looked a lot better on the first scrimmage,”continued Davis.
According to Davis, the absentees and injures caused them tosubstitute the players in those positions today and some weren’tfamiliar with their responsibilities.
“We had a mismatch offense today,” Davis said. “We had to getthings going. We were also mixed at receiver.”
Davis said that being a young football team also causesproblems.
“We were much better at this point last year,” explained Davisof his sophomore-dominated 2006 team. Last year Co-Lin finished9-3, winning the South Division title and the Golden Isles Bowl inBrunswick, Ga.
The Co-Lin offense worked on its passing and running plays whilethe Wolfpack defense was trying to stop them.
Freshman Micah Davis was taking most of the snaps at quarterbackand serving as holder for freshman punter/kicker Will Thibodeaux.Thibodeaux practiced on kickoffs, extra points and field goalsSaturday morning in game situations.
Two of the main things Coach Davis wanted to accomplish inpractice was for the offense not to turn the ball over and thedefense to play well.
“We are working at matching up our offense,” said Davis. “We’llswitch back and forth on offense.”
Davis said the Wolves aren’t as good at this point as lastyear’s team. “We have to get them (injured ones) well. We have toget better at getting our offense to do what we want them todo.
“I really like this group of kids,” added Davis. “When we getour people well, we will be better.”
