Peavey, Ole Brook Panthers hunt answers after jamboree

In what Brookhaven coach Tucker Peavey described as adisappointing performance, the Ole Brook Panthers lost a pair ofjamboree games Thursday night on sweat-soaked King Field. Laurelbeat the Panthers 13-6 and defending Class 4A state champion WayneCounty dished out a 28-6 whipping in the final pair of 10-minutequarters, ending a 5-hour marathon.
Wayne County rallied past McComb 14-13 on the last play of anearlier game. McComb beat Laurel 8-7 in the opener which foundfootball fans huddled beneath umbrellas seeking protection from theglaring sun and 100-degree heat.
“Overall, it was disappointing,” said Peavey, rehashing histeam’s performance. “We have to re-evaluate our team because someplayers we thought could play, didn’t get the job done.”
Peavey said his team would have to play much better againstNorth Pike Aug. 31, in the 2007 season opener. “We came out in thesecond game against Wayne County and they whipped us every waypossible. We didn’t compete very well.”
By contrast, the Wayne County War Eagles appeared to be flyinghigh after escaping McComb. They limited the Panthers to 125 yardstotal offense.
The Eagles soared to a 21-0 first quarter lead, scoring on apair of touchdown passes and an 8-yard run by Fred Henderson.Starting quarterback Calvin McDougle passed 9 yards to ShauriceCunningham on a slant pattern for the first TD and DeMarcusHenderson threw a 24-yard scoring pass to wide receiver LarryRoscoe.
It was 28-0 when running back Donald Ruffin raced 5 yards for aTD.
The Panthers finally got on the board with 4 seconds left toplay. After a 39-yard scamper by freshman quarterback DewaunHarris, Clayton Winston raced 18 yards down the left sideline forthe TD.
Wayne County coach Marcus Boyles said he was pleased with histeam’s performance. “Our intensity and effort picked up in thesecond half against Brookhaven. McComb had outplayed us 18 of the20 minutes and deserved to win.”
Boyles said he liked playing in jamborees. “Tucker did a goodjob and it was well run. You get a lot of kids involved and you getto see how your players react under the lights. Our second andthird teams did well.”
The Eaglets had 194 yards total offense, gaining 93 on theground.
Ole Brook senior quarterback Charles (Bobo) Rancifer completed 5of 11 passes for 26 yards against the Eagles and was interceptedonce.
Laurel 13, Brookhaven 7
The Golden Tornadoes roared to a 13-0 lead with 2:27 left in thesecond quarter. Backup quarterback Walter Smith faked a dive playand scampered 35 yards to paydirt. Starting quarterback Akeem Davisended a scoreless duel on a 2-yard plunge with 5:55 showing.
The Panthers scored with 1:13 left in the second quarter on aleaping 22-yard reception by Harris in the end zone. Chris Lowmankicked the extra point.
“Turnovers (2 fumbles) killed us and kept us from scoringearlier,” said Peavey.
Renaldo Epps intercepted a pass for the Panthers.
Prior to the game, a moment of silence was noted in remembranceof 2007 BHS grads Larry Winters and Peyton Culver who were killedin an auto accident Monday night. Winters was a standout defensiveend for the Panthers and his No. 89 jersey number was painted ineach end zone.
“I’ve got 20 seniors and they are doing a good job,” said Laurelcoach Milton Smith, a former cornerback at Mississippi State(1986-89). “We executed well on offense and worked on basic stuff.We have a lot of work ahead of us.”

McDougle hit Stefino Rankin with a short pass and StormSeawright kicked the winning PAT with no time left on the clock asthe Eagles clipped McComb.
