WESSON — Wind and rain from the remnants of Hurricane Humbertoplayed havoc with the football Thursday night in Stone Stadium.Turnovers plagued the Southwest Mississippi Community College Bearsbut Co-Lin’s Kentrell Cleveland couldn’t be stopped on the soggyfield, sparking the Wolfpack to a 21-0 victory over theirarchrivals.

Cleveland cashed in a fourth-quarter touchdown on a 16-yardsplash to the end zone, crushing any hopes of a Southwest comeback.The 5-foot-9, 190-pound sophomore from Mendenhall finished with 99yards rushing on 26 carries.

How did Cleveland and his teammates keep a handle on the soggyfootball?

“Practice makes perfect,” smiled Cleveland. “Coach has us do apopcorn drill in practice every day and it really helps. You usethree backs and it’s like juggling three balls.”

Cleveland said he was happy to claim a victory over Southwest.”It’s a rivalry game. I’m proud of our offensive line. They didwell.”

Co-Lin (1-2, 1-0) claimed its first win of the season. Southwest(1-2, 0-1), by contrast, couldn’t sustain an offensive drive asCo-Lin’s aggressive defense put a muzzle on the Bears. Southwestmanaged only one first down and 11 yards total offense the firsthalf.

Head coach Charles Anthony watched Co-Lin capitalize onbreakdowns in the special teams. Preston Smith returned a Southwestfumbled punt to the Bears’ 2-yard line, setting the stage for a1-yard sneak by Co-Lin quarterback Micah Davis.
