Brookhaven officials will once again ask the MississippiDepartment of Transportation to conduct a traffic count on Highway51 to see if a traffic light in front of King’s Daugthers Medicalcenter can be justified.
At Tuesday night’s board meeting, Ward Four Alderwoman ShirleyEstes asked Mayor Bob Massengill to repeat the request, which hasbeen made several times in previous years. She cited currentvisibility issues at the intersection of Highway 51 and BiglaneDrive.
“People are having difficulty with that intersection,” she said.”We have a problem with people not knowing that entrance is there.Additional signage will help.”
Massengill said MDOT has stated that based on traffic counts, the agency cannot justify a traffic light at that intersection.
Ward Five Alderman D.W. Maxwell said he would be in favor of atraffic light if it were equipped with a camera that would keep itgreen for Highway 51 traffic if there were no waiting traffic onBiglane Drive.
