Officers discuss ways to deter shoplifting

Brookhaven Police Capt. Roger Wilson told shopowners Thursdaythat while some shoplifters are hard to detect, there are some youjust can’t miss – like the lady who tried to carry the frozenturkey out between her knees.
“Well, she’s gonna walk funny,” Wilson said, prompting laughteramong those gathered for the Thursday morning seminar the Chamberof Commerce.
Another man tried to sneak out with ribeye steaks in histrousers, Wilson said. And there was another woman who had hooksattached to the inside of her dress so she could smuggle meat outof the grocery store.
Wilson, Police Chief Pap Henderson and Lt. Joe Portrey spoke toshopowners and chamber members to raise awareness of possibleshoplifters in their stores and how to handle them.
Chamber President David Holland began the presentation byreminding attendees that shoplifting has always been a problem.
