Statewide approach only way to consider radar for sheriffs

For all their efforts through the years, sheriffs have beenunsuccessful in getting state lawmakers to allow county lawenforcement officials to use radar on the roads and streets thatthey patrol.
From statewide plans to limited multi-county approvals, nearlyevery conceivable approach to radar authorization has been triedand failed. The latest idea, a county-specific concept, is doomedto fail as well.
While Lamar County Sheriff Danny Rigel’s goal is to get radarauthority just for his county, sheriffs and lawmakers from otherareas will surely seek radar approval for their respective areas. And this “piling on,” albeit on a county-by-county basis, is whythe latest radar effort won’t pass legislative muster.
It is inconceivable that state lawmakers – faced with tacklingthousands of bills during every legislative session – would debatethe individual merits of 82 counties’ requests to run radar onroads in their jurisdictions.
Therefore, the road to radar would lead back to the familiarstatewide approach that has failed many times in the past.
