Aldermen schedule Oct. 23 hearing on ward redistricting

Brookhaven aldermen have scheduled a public hearing for Tuesday,Oct. 23, on a ward redistricting map approved at the Sept. 18 boardmeeting.

The map proposed by annexation consultant Mike Slaughterfollowing disussions with city officials shows the new wards asthey apply to the annexation area. Slaughter’s firm came up withthree possible options, and the board agreed on the most viableone.

The proposed plan complies with Department of Justice standardsfor racial makeup and keeping the numbers balanced between thewards. It maintains three majority black wards and three majoritywhite wards.

The hearing will be Oct. 23 at 5:30 p.m. in the city boardroom.Citizens will have the opportunity to comment and offer input onthe plan.

Once the citizens of Brookhaven have had the chance to add theirinput, the plan will go to the Department of Justice for finalapproval. The plan could then be used in future city elections.
