Monticello women take bead on poverty

Impoverished Ugandan women are hoping a handmade jewelry sale inMonticello can help lift them from poverty.

The United Methodist Women of Monticello United Methodist Churchwill sponsor a BeadForLife “Women Helping Women” jewelry show andsale Oct. 9 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the church’s fellowshiphall.

“We don’t make a penny,” said Susan Martindale, missionscoordinator. “One hundred percent of the money goes toBeadForLife.”

Beaded jewelry sold in the sale was handmade by Ugandan women,many of whom are single mothers, she said.

“They’re all made of 100 percent recycled paper and no two arealike,” Martindale said. “When I first saw them I was just amazedat what they were doing.”
