Drug agent offers insight into job

The Brookhaven Noon Lions Club got a little bit of a taste ofwhat it’s like in the streets for those fighting the war on drugsat Tuesday’s meeting.

John Douglas, of the Southwest Mississippi Narcotics Unit, spoketo the club about his work with the drug task force and touched oneverything from funding to sting operations to crazy excusessuspects give.

“These pants are not my pants,” Douglas said one suspect toldhim. “I got up and these pants were laying there so I put them on.These drugs in these pants? I don’t know where it came from.”

Douglas briefly addressed the issue of statewide funding forarea drug task forces, saying that the public can help by knowingwhat their elected officials stand for in the war on drugs.

“What helps? Be cognizant of your elected officials and wherethey stand on cracking down on drug crime,” he said. “Funding is ahuge issue. We’re operating on our own money right now.”
