Colonels turn back Riverfield

RAYFIELD, La. — The Copiah Academy Colonels handed theRiverfield Raiders a 14-7 non-district loss in football actionFriday night.

Copiah, coached by Scotty Cline, improved to 7-1 on the seasonand remains 1-1 in District 4-AA play. Riverfield, out of DistrictDist. 3-AA, fell to 5-3 overall and remains 1-1 in districtaction.

“It was a good win for us,” said Cline. “It was a defensivebattle the whole night.”

The defenses for both teams shut down the opponents running gameto under 40 yards. Copiah was held to 31 yards and Riverfield to35.

Copiah scored in the second quarter on a 6-yard pass-play fromquarterback Daniel Sims to Ben Boone. Richard Henley kicked the PATand the Colonels led 7-0.

In the third quarter, Copiah punched in its second TD of thegame on a 27-yard pass from Sims to Boone for a 14-0 lead.

Riverfield scored in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run bySherwood Ransom. John Taylor Dane kicked the extra point, cuttingthe deficit to 14-7.

For the game, Sims completed 8 of 20 passes for 141 yards.Hunter Greer led the receivers with 4 catches for 71 yards. Boonehad 2 catches for 39 yards. Brandon Greer finished with 18 yards on2 receptions. Bryce Guess had 1 catch for 18 yards.

Powering the Copiah defense with 11 tackles was seniorlinebacker Alex Guess. Matthew Wright made 9 tackles. Followingwith 8 stops was Bryce Guess. Rob Pyron recovered a fumble.

Copiah travels to Simpson County Friday night for a key districtgame. Simpson defeated Wayne Academy 22-16.
