Lady Wolves win opener

WESSON — The 2007-08 basketball season got under way Mondaynight in Mullen Gymnasium for the Copiah-Lincoln Community CollegeLady Wolves. After a sluggish start, Co-Lin head coach Gwyn Youngwatched his Lady Wolves put the ream, steam and dry-clean to theCoahoma Community College Lady Tigers 70-45.

With the non-division win, Co-Lin moves to 1-0. Coahoma fell to0-1. Co-Lin travels to Holmes Thursday with the tipoff of thewomen’s game set for 5 p.m.

The Lady Wolves were a bit sluggish in their season debut. Missingseveral players from last season’s NJCAA tournament team, including5 starters, Young’s youthful group took several minutes to gel.

“We were a bit tight to start tonight,” said Coach Young who isbeginning his 32nd year at Co-Lin. “We were nervous. We have thosepregame jitters.”

There was only 1-tie and 1 lead change in the game. For Co-Lin,Kristen Ellis opened the season with a short jumper in the paint.Coahoma’s Jimisha Washington responded with a basket to deadlockthe game at 2-all at the 18:09 mark of the first half.

It would be all Lady Wolves after that point. Reisha Bullock, a5-foot-9 guard from Kenner, La., pumped in 13 of her game-high 17point in the opening 20 minutes. Her team realized a 35-19 lead atthe intermission.

“We had some spotty shooting in the first half,” Youngcommented.

The Lady Wolves opened the second half with an impressive 20-7 run.During that stretch, Co-Lin scored baskets off turnovers and theirshooting range improved from the floor.

“We shot the ball better in the second half,” said Coach Young. “Weneed to work on our free throws.” Young was eluding to the 6 for 22effort that Co-Lin shot from the charity stripe.

Lending support for the Lady Wolves was Ellis with 9 rebounds andAlisha Mason with 8. Hazlehurst native Tierra Wilbert was tops insteals and assists with 3 and 4 respectively. Bullock had 3 stealsand 2 assists.

Washington paced Coahoma with 9 points. The Lady Tigers are coachedby Lacole Brooks.

Co-Lin resumes play Thursday at Holmes Community College inGoodman.
