MONTICELLO – The final home game of the regular season was aspecial one for the Lawrence County Cougar senior football players,cheerleaders and band members.

When the pregame festivities were finished, it didn’t takeLawrence County long to put away the Port Gibson Blue Wave by alopsided score of 68-0.

“Coming into the game, I was afraid my kids would overlook PortGibson,” said Lawrence County head football coach Mike Davis afterthe win. “We came out and scored from the start. The kids playedhard. It was our type of game where you control it from thestart.”

Lawrence County finished in second place in the region with a 5-1worksheet and is 9-1 on the season. The Cougars host NortheastLauderdale (Region 5 No. 3) Friday at 7 p.m. in the opening roundof the Class 4A state playoffs. NE Lauderdale knocked off Quitman21-6 last Friday.

On the the Cougars’ first play of the game, running back KendrickHardy exploded up the middle of the field for a 65-yard touchdown.Rashawn Haynes kicked his first of 7 extra points to put theCougars up 7-0.

Lawrence County got the ball back to set up a 4-yard plunge byKenyatta Harness to push the hosts lead to 14-0.

Cougar Isiah Ferdinand scored on a 46-yard touchdown run asLawrence County jumped ahead of Port Gibson 21-0.

The final first quarter Cougar score came on a 20-yard burst byJosh Cameron for the 28-0 lead.

On the downside, Lawrence County lost starting offensive linemanColton Sistrunk to an ankle fracture late in the first quarter. Thegame was halted until Sistrunk could be taken by ambulance to thehospital.

The Cougars continued to score at will, picking up 4 TDs in thesecond quarter to carry a 55-0 lead in at the half. Rashawn Harnessscored a 7 -yard TD. Then Cougar quarterback Adam Watson completedtouchdown strikes to Brandon Middlebrook for 9 yards, Ferdinand for48 yards and Mathew Wells for 29 yards,

Lawrence County went to the bench theremainder of the game which was played with the clock running. NickLambert went in for a 1-yard TD in the third quarter to give thehosts a 62-0 advantage..

In the final frame, freshman Travis Havis exploded for a 75-yardrun to give the Cougars the 68-0 win.

Lawrence County finished with 20 rushes for 296 yards, plus 100yards passing for 396 total yards. Wilson completed 4 of 7 passesfor 100 yards and 3 TDs in the first half.

“We are thankful for the fans coming out and supporting us,” addedDavis. “They supported us all year.”
