Loyd Star sweeps West Lincoln

Loyd Star’s Matthew Henderson fired in 15 points, grabbed 10rebounds, made 5 steals and had 3 assists Thursday night indirecting the visiting Hornets to a 68-46 win over the West LincolnBears in Jack Case Gymnasium.

In the girls game, Haley Sones and Shuntell Dillion netted 10points apiece in leading the Lady Hornets to a 42-30 victory overthe Lady Bears.

West Lincoln visits North Pike tonight.

Loyd Star 69, West Lincoln 46

The unbeaten Loyd Star boys (4-0) jumpedon West Lincoln (2-1) in the first quarter to take a 17-3 lead. TheBears came back with a 14-13 run in the second quarter to cut thedeficit to 30-17.

“We played well in the first half,” said Loyd Star boys coach Gene’Moochie’ Britt. “We were able to get some easy layups. I’m proudto get everyone in the game. We rebounded the ball better tonightto get second and third shots. We still have to improve. We playeda good game. We were glad to win at West Lincoln.”

Contributing to the Loyd Star win with 11 points each were RickyBarnes, Glenn Thomas and Ron Jones. Thomas collected 9 reboundsfollowed by McKinley Hamilton with 5 rebounds.

“We came out flat and did not attack,” said West Lincoln coach LaneYoung. “Loyd Star was able to score in transition. We have to learnfrom our mistakes, but also get everyone playing hard and on thesame page.”

Jamie Byrd sparked the Bears with 16 points, 6 rebounds, 1 stealand 2 assists. Aaron Collins netted 12 points, grabbed 5 reboundsand blocked 3 shots.

Loyd Star 42, West Lincoln 30

In the girls contest, the Hornets grabbeda 14-7 lead over the Bears in the first quarter. At halftime, LoydStar held a 23-16 lead. The Hornets put the game out of reach inthe third quarter with an 18-2 run for a 41-18 advantage going intothe fourth quarter.

“We played a good first quarter,” saidLoyd Star girls coach Billy Vaughn. “West Lincoln does a good jobon defense and that made it hard to run our offense.”

Shannon Chester and Dakota Brooks added 9 points each for LoydStar. Brooks pulled down 6 rebounds and had 4 assists. Chestercollected 5 rebounds, made 7 steals and had 4 assists.

“We kept in striking distance in the first half but we playedpoorly in the second half,” said Young. “We have to make changes.Loyd Star half-court trapped killed us in the second half.”

Leading the Bears with 7 points apiece were Talashia Fells andTatianna Marshall. Fells pulled down 12 rebounds, made 3 steals andblocked 3 shots. Hannah Knouse pulled down 4 rebounds.
