Lady Wolves looking for right chemistry

SUMMIT — While Co-Lin women’s basketball coach Gwyn Youngcontinues to experiment in hopes of discovering the rightchemistry, sophomore forward Alisha Mason is providing a solidingredient. Mason accounted for 10 rebounds and 10 points Tuesday,helping lead the Lady Wolves to an 85-41 victory over the Delgado(La.) Community College Lady Dolphins in the Southwest Coca-ColaClassic.

Mason had plenty of support from newcomers Reisha Bullock andSharica Ward as they provided 12 points apiece for the Lady Wolveswho improved to 5-1 on the season. Bullock is a 5-9 transfer fromIowa Western by way of Kenner, La. and DeLaSalle High School. Wardis a 6-foot freshman from Jackson Forest Hill.

“If we keep working, we should be pretty good,” predicted Mason,a 5-10 forward from Ruth (Enterprise). “We’ve had some big changessince last year,” when Co-Lin finished 30-5, and placed sixth inthe NJCAA National Tournament in Salina, Kan.

Co-Lin graduated all five starters from that standout squad.Mason and sophomore post Kristin Ellis were top reserves lastseason.

“We struggle sometimes on offense and defense but we have a goodgroup of freshmen and four good sophomores,” said Mason.

Asked about the game, Coach Young said his team’s depthoverwhelmed Delagado which trailed 30-17 at halftime. “We had themoutmanned. Delgado played harder than we played in the secondhalf.”

Young frequently substituted five players during the first 20minutes of action. His team took control early in the secondhalf.

“We really don’t have the right combination yet,” Youngcontinued. “We have some players who are better defensively andothers are better offensively.”

Ellis hit a short jumper to start the second half. Mason andShonda Dumas sank jump shots and Bullock cashed in a steal with a3-point play. Shalenia Wilcher followed with a trey and Co-Lin by23 points, 43-20, with 15:55 left to play.

Delgado (0-9), coached by Tommy L. Smith, is still looking forits first win. The Dolphins got 10 points and 9 rebounds fromJohnneisha Luckett, a 5-9 freshman from St. Rose, La.

Co-Lin resumes play Dec. 1, hosting Delgado for a Saturdayafternoon doubleheader in Mullen Gymnasium.
