Wesson ambushes BC

WESSON — Sophomore center Ann Shelby Davis fired in 15 points,pulled down 7 rebounds and made 6 steals Tuesday night to lead theWesson Lady Cobras to a 47-43 win over the Bogue Chitto Lady ‘Catsin basketball action.

In the varsity boys game, senior center Josh Hart netted 16points and pulled down 12 rebounds for a double-double in directingthe Cobras to a 49-39 victory over the Bobcats. It was the BogueChitto boys first varsity game of the season.

Junior varsity action saw the Wesson boys beat Bogue Chitto48-20 and the Lady ‘Cats dump the Lady Cobras 33-18.

Wesson travels to Mize and Bogue Chitto invades Loyd StarThursday night for 4 games. The junior varsity girls game begins at4 p.m. followed by the JV boys then varsity girls and boys.

Wesson 47, Bogue Chitto 43

Free throws turned out to be the difference in the final 40seconds of the girls game. Bogue Chitto cut Wesson’s lead to 42-40but had to foul to stop the Lady Cobras from running the clockout.

Down the stretch, Davis was 3-for-4 and Marian Allen was 2-2from the charity line to put Wesson up 47-40 . Bogue Chitto’sAneshia Dillon nailed a 3-pointer with 5.2 seconds left to play tocut the deficit to 47-43 before the Cobras ran out the finalseconds to secure the win. From the free-throw line, the hosts were18 of 35 and the ‘Cats were 8 of 14.

“Ann Shelby Davis, Marian Allen and Macie Case played a greatball game,” said Wesson girls coach Hugh Webb following the win.”Kelly Westmorland came off the bench and did a great job subbingfor Leah (Greer) who was in foul trouble. Ansley Schimmel came onin the third quarter and scored 5 big points.” Wesson scored 8points in the third quarter.

The Bogue Chitto girls started fast and took a 12-7 lead overWesson (4-2) in the first quarter. The Lady Cobras answered with an18-11 scoring run in the second quarter to take a 25-23 lead in atthe half. The Cobras maintained a slim lead over the’ Cats by 3points, 33-30, going in to the fourth quarter.

The ‘Cats, coached by Christi Terrell, were led by Shelby Tobiaswith 15 points and 9 rebounds. Darcy Miller scored 8 points.Collecting 7 rebounds was Kelli Howard.

“We are real young and we are making mistakes caused byinexperience,” said Wallace. “We have to play to the level we arecapable of.”

The ‘Cats are 1-1 on the season.

Wesson 49, Bogue Chitto 39

This is the ugliest 4-1 start I’ve seen,” saidWesson boys coach Ron Kessler after the game. “We have to startgetting tougher mentally. We have the opportunity to put away teamsand we’re not doing it. We need more togetherness.”

The teams were deadlocked at 7-all in the first quarter. A 12-1scoring run by Wesson put the Cobras on top of Bogue Chitto 19-8 athalftime. Going into the final frame, the Cobras commanded a 35-18lead.

Contributing to the Wesson win with 10 points was Lonnie Reeves.Charles Howard had 8 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Josh Hood made5 steals.

For Coach Andy Smithie’s Bobcats, Justin London led with 18points, netting 6 three-pointers with 5 coming in the second half.London also led off the backboards with 9 rebounds. Firing in 10points was D.J. Turner. Seth Avants pulled down 6 rebounds.

Kessler said he was impressed by the Bobcats. “Bogue Chitto isgoing to be good. They’re playing together as a team. They’reunselfish. They are going to get a lot of wins.”
