Prep hands BA first defeats

FLOWOOD — Brookhaven Academy dropped three games in a four-gameset Tuesday night at Jackson Prep. It was the first defeats forBrookhaven Academy as the Patriots nipped the Cougars 52-51 and theLady Patriots topped the Lady Cougars 39-38 in varsity basketballaction.

Jackson Prep 52, Brookhaven 51

Brookhaven boys coach Dale Watts saw his team take an early 7-2lead against the Patriots, but Prep responded and claimed a 29-28lead at half time. John Yerger and Bob House each scored 11 pointsto lead Jackson Prep as the Patriots improved to 8-1 on theyear.

“I thought the guys did a good job of keeping themselves in thegame.” said Watts. “We only played six guys and not having Daniel(Lofton) hurt us a bit. But we put ourselves in position to win thegame at the end. We just couldn’t get it done.”

Blaine Roberts scored 11 points to lead Brookhaven. CoreyDickerson and Sawyer Wallace each added 10 points as the Cougarsfell to 5-1 on the year.

Brookhaven was without senior starting forward Daniel Lofton,who is participating the the MPSA AA All-Star Football Game thisweek at Mississippi College.

Jackson Prep 39, Brookhaven 38

Brookhaven’s Lady Cougars met defeat for the first time thisseason as the Lady Patriots used an aggressive pressure defense todefeat the visitors in a hard-fought contest. Laura Cole led theLady Pats with 9 points.

“We couldn’t stay in a rhythm offensively.” said Brookhavencoach Barry Gray. “We would make a run and score a few baskets butthey would come right back with a run of their own.

“We had a good chance to win the game at the end but the shotjust didn’t fall. I think this will help us learn and improve asthe season goes on.”

Kelli Snider scored a game-high 12 points and Anna KatelynMangold scored 8 points but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Cougarsfell to 8-1 on the year.

Junior High Results

In junior high boys action, Dalton Welch scored a game-high 16points to lead Jackson Prep to a 51-23 whipping of the Cougars.Carter Lindsey and Christian Jarrett each scored 7 points insupport.

Chandler Rogers scored 14 points to lead Brookhaven

In junior high girls action, Laura Beth Wright scored 10 pointsand Anna Lofton added 7 points as the Lady Cougars topped JacksonPrep 29-24 to improve to 9-0 on the year.

Laurah Smith scored 10 points to lead the Lady Patriots.
