No charges are yet filed in the death of a woman who was hit andkilled while walking down Interstate 55 in the early morning hoursof Dec. 30.
Charlotte Hamilton, 49, of Smithdale, was killed instantly whenshe was struck by at least one vehicle on I-55 around 1:30 a.m.
Mississippi Highway Patrol Public Affairs Officer Sgt. RustyBoyd said 43-year-old Raymond M. Cutrer of Bogue Chitto cameforward that afternoon to say that he suspected it had been his2004 Ford F350 that had killed Hamilton.
Boyd said Cutrer thought he had hit a deer at the time of thecollision, but that he had gone to a Highway Patrol investigator’shouse Sunday afternoon to report his fears.
“He had stopped a little way down the road and looked at histruck, and of course it was messed up,” Boyd said. “There werepieces of the grill at the scene of the accident that matched whatwas missing from his truck.”
Investigators are trying to determine whether Hamilton waswalking in the roadway at all, or if she was completely on theshoulder of the interstate.
“At this time we don’t know exactly where she was,” he said.
Deputy Coroner John Hart had said Hamilton was struck by atleast one car, but Boyd said it was the initial impact withCutrer’s truck that had caused her death.
“We know it was his vehicle by evidence at the scene,” Boydsaid. “It was him that was first. As far as any other cars, therewas no evidence to compare them to, and she was already dead at thetime of any secondary impact.”
Boyd said there are no charges at this time, but that theincident is still under investigation.
