Franklin Co. rules tourney

MONTICELLO — The Franklin County Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogsswept Lawrence County in the finals of the Lawrence CountyInvitational Tournament Saturday night. First, Coach CharlesMoore’s Lady Bulldogs thwarted the Lady Cougars offense, winning56-35. After that, Coach Chris Jordan’s Bulldogs beat the Cougars68-53.
Earlier in the afternoon, West Marion defeated Salem in boys’and girls’ consolation games.
Franklin Co. 56, Lawrence Co. 35
In the girls final, Shareka Hunt and Paige Webster scored 16points each to lead the Lady Bulldogs over Coach Vicki Rutland’sLady Cougars. The injury-depleted LCHS girls, with two of theirleading scorers facing January knee surgery, simply couldn’t scoreagainst a stout Franklin County defense. Lawrence County scoredjust 18 points in the first three quarters, trailing 46-18 at thatpoint.
Candice Little led Lawrence County with 10 points.
The Lady Bulldogs improved to 12-6 with the win. The LadyCougars fell to 7-13.
Franklin Co. 68, Lawrence Co. 53
The boys title game was spirited and competitive until halftime.In the waning seconds of the half, Lawrence County had cut asizable Franklin County lead to 3 points, at 30-27. The Bulldogs’Jarvis Hunt hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer, giving Franklin County a6-point halftime lead. Lawrence County would never get anycloser.
Jamie Collins, an All-Area MVP in football, led the Bulldogswith 18 points. He was joined in double figures by Jarvis King andJarvis Hunt, who had 13 and 11 points respectively.
Cazlyn Peyton and Leroy Fifer provided almost all of the offensefor Coach Preston Wilson’s Cougars. Peyton hit 7 of 12 three-pointattempts en route to a 23-point night. Fifer added 13 points and 8rebounds. Rio Martin handed out 9 assists.
Franklin County improved to 4-13 with the win and LawrenceCounty fell to 5-13 with the loss.
