McComb takes 2 at Lawrence Co.

MONTICELLO — The McComb Tigers swept a varsity basketballdoubleheader from Lawrence County in Division 6-4A action Tuesdaynight. In girls action, McComb broke to a big early lead, held offa spirited Lawrence County comeback, then pulled away to a 65-51win. In boys action, Coach Hilton Harrell’s high-flying Tigersfought off a major challenge from the underdog Cougars, winning75-70.
Early in the second quarter of the girls game, Angela Johnson’sLady Tigers held a 22-point lead. Lawrence County fought backstubbornly, cutting its deficit to 5 point early in the fourthquarter, only to see McComb pull away at the end.
Four Lady Tigers netted double figures, led by Portia Craft, whohad 17 points. Trivetra Wilson added 16. Alisha Johnson and KeyottaMartin scored 12 and 10, respectively.
McComb’s girls improved to 14-6 with the win, 5-1 in thedivision. Vicki Rutland’s Lady Cougars fell to 7-14 overall, and1-3 in division play.
McComb 75, Lawrence Co. 70
The boys game was a dandy. McComb entered as a heavy favoriteagainst the struggling Lawrence County boys, but Preston Wilson’sCougars made quite a game of it, thanks largely to some hot 3-pointshooting.
McComb landed 4 players in double figures, led by center KiamMagee, who had 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots. MitchellThompson added 15 points. Derrick Harris had 14, and Julius Brownscored 12. Bobby Felder was a solid floor leader for the Tigers. Hescored 8 points, had 4 steals and 4 assists.
Lawrence County connected on 12 three-point attempts in thegame. Rio Martin and Brandon Middlebrook hit 4 each. Middlebrookand Leroy Fifer each scored 16 points for the Cougars. Martin added12. Fifer added 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Cazlyn Peyton had 5assists, and Willie Toney, 4. Ladarius Jenkins had 5 rebounds.
Powerful McComb improved to 16-3 overall, and 5-1 in Division6-4A play. Lawrence County fell to 5-14 overall, and 0-4 in thedivision.
