Wesson lauds senior kickers

WESSON — On Friday night the Wesson soccer teams held SeniorNight to honor the players and their parents. The boys teamrecognized George Baker, Justin Goodman, Blake Whittington, andMitchell Wilkinson. Injured teammate Brandon Burch could not bepresent and was also recognized.
The Lady Cobras recognized seniors Kayla Case, Trystan Eschete,Faith Johns, and Amber Joyce.
Wesson held the home field advantage in district competitionagainst the Crystal Springs Tigers. The Cobras played a fiercelycompetitive game against the Tigers but ended up with a verydisappointing loss during the last few minutes of the game. TheCobras lost 3-2 after a back and forth scoring contest between thetwo teams.
The first goal of the evening was made by Brandon Nettles off abeautiful cross field pass from Chris Fink. Just minutes before thehalf, the Tiger offense crowded the goal and scored before theCobra defense could clear the ball, leaving the game tied 1-1.
Fink scored early after the half on a penalty kick against theTigers. The Cobras played aggressively during the second half,driving back the Tiger’s offense at every opportunity. However, theTigers broke through the Cobras’ defense and took the opportunityto tie the score 2-2. The Tigers finally cinched the win when theyscored on a penalty kick with less than five minutes remaining. TheCobras’ record stands at 4-9, 3-4.
The Lady Cobras posted their third straight winwith a 2-0 shutout against the Lady Tigers. Both teams fought astrong defensive battle during the first half. Trystan Escheteposted a goal late in the half with a penalty kick against the LadyTigers.
During the second half, Wesson’s Christy Jackson scored off akick by Faith Johns that bounced over the Tiger goalie’s head.Helping to ensure the shutout for the Lady Cobras were defensiveplayers Stephanie Berry, Faith Johns, and Jordan Nettles.
The Lady Cobras’ record improves to 11-5, 4-1. Wesson will playits final soccer game of the regular season tonight in a districtmatch at Richland.
