Brook, Wesson eliminated

Area soccer teams made an early exit from the MHSAA stateplayoffs. The Wesson girls and both Brookhaven teams wereeliminated in Tuesday’s opening round.

Brookhaven, playing in the Class 4A playoffs at West Jones, lost2-0 in the boys game and 3-1 in the girls match. West Joneseliminated Ole Brook from the state football playoffs lastNovember.

The BHS Panthers, coached by Kevin Bower, finish with a 13-6-2record. They were division runners-up to the Florence Eagles(15-5-2) who defeated Northeast Jones 8-1 yesterday.

The Lady Panthers (12-6-1) also were runners-up to Florence.They got a second-half goal from Katie Hoover, cutting theirdeficit to 2-1.

“Our girls played hard and it was a good game,” said Bower.”There was a lot of water on the field. They had to postpone thegame for an hour because of a severe thunderstorm.”

Bower said BHS goalkeeper Sabrina Delaughter made 3 outstandingsaves.

The Florence Lady Eagles (15-6-2) eliminated Northeast Jones3-2.

The Wesson girls, competing in Class 1A-2A-3A, were shut out 6-0by Greene County (17-6-3). The Lady Cobras (11-7) were runners-upto Natchez Cathedral in the division race. Cathedral was eliminated9-0 by Our Lady Academy of Bay St. Louis.
