Lady Cobras hand Hinds AHS foul loss

WESSON — The Hinds AHS Lady Bulldogs are well known for theirextreme physical style of play. It caught up with them Tuesdaynight.

The Lady Bulldogs were assessed 26 fouls and had three startersfoul out as the Wesson Lady Cobras held on for a huge 52-42Division 6-2A upset win over Hinds AHS. The was the first time theWesson girls have beaten Hinds AHS in several years.

In the varsity boys game, top ranked Hinds AHS improved itswinning streak to 24-0 in a 70-37 win over Wesson.

Wesson 54, Hinds AHS 42

It was a very good officiated game,” saidWesson girls basketball coach Hugh Webb of the officials, BobbyAllen and Fred Magee. “Hinds is very physical. It’s not a healthyway to play basketball.”

The Wesson girls improved their division record to 7-3 and 17-11overall on the season. Hinds AHS fell to 8-2 in division action and12-11 overall.

“It was a good win for our program,” added Webb, “The girlsworked hard. It was a team victory.”

Freshman guard Marian Allen and sophomore post player Ann ShelbyDavis led the Lady Cobras with 16 points apiece. Allen scored allher points from the free throw line, going 16 of 18 on the night.Macie Case netted 8 points, including 2 treys.

The Lady Cobras trailed the Lady Bulldogs 10-6 in the firstquarter and 23-21 at the half. In the third quarter, Wesson went ona 16-8 scoring run to take a 37-31 lead into the final frame.

Hinds AHS got 12 points from Jerrica Noel and 10 points fromLeanna Washington. The Lady Bulldogs are coached by BruceBaker.

Hinds AHS 70, Wesson 37

“You have to slow down the tempo to play with these guys,” saidWesson boys coach Ron Kessler. “We made some mistakes earlyon.”

The Cobras (16-9, 4-6) held the Bulldogs (24-0, 11-0) to 4points early in the first quarter until Hinds AHS convertedWesson’s turnovers and changed the tempo to their favor with a 16-4lead at the end of the first quarter.

At halftime, the Bulldogs led 36-17 and 48-28 going into thefinal frame.

Wesson was led by Lonnie Reeves with 18 points. Josh Hart andJosh Hood finished with 8 points apiece.

Directing Coach Keith Williams’ Bulldogs with 23 points wasJaCorey Wright. Kenderek Washington pumped in 18 points followed byKeeslee Stewart with 13.

Junior varsity action

Hinds AHS held off Wesson for a 25-24 win in JV girls play.

Shauntey Walker led Wesson with 6 points, followed by SummerRials and Maura Smith with 5 points apiece.
