BHS trio sign pacts

Brookhaven’s Region 6-4A championship team produced threefootball scholarship signees. They are quarterback Charles (Bobo)Rancifer, wide receiver Simmie Yarborough and center DarionSmith.

Yarborough plans a future with the Southeastern LouisianaUniversity Lions of Hammond, La. Rancifer and Smith have signedwith the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Wolfpack.

Ole Brook head football coach and athletic director TuckerPeavey said the trio have a bright future in college. “They aregood players, good people and first-class kids. All three come fromgood families and they will be successful in college.”

Yarborough (6-1, 200) said he was impressed by the atmosphereand the facilities at Southeastern. “I like the coaches and I gotto meet the players. They had a lot of positive things to say aboutthe program.”

The SEL Lions are NCAA Division II members of the SouthlandConference. Coached by Mike Lucas, they finished 3-8 lastseason.

As a senior, Yarborough caught 28 passes for 435 yards and 5touchdowns. He averaged 15.5 yards per catch. He amassed 812all-purpose yards.

He plans to major in math and education.

Rancifer (6-2, 200), like Yarborough, played in theMississippi/Alabama All-Star Classic last December. They helped theMississippi team to an impressive victory.

A 3-year starter at quarterback, Rancifer completed 58 of 95passes for 806 yards and 6 touchdowns as a senior. He rushed for929 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also returned 2 kickoffs fortouchdowns, leading the Panthers to an 8-2 record.

On defense, Rancifer saw limited duty at safety. In the All-StarClassic, he returned an interception for a TD.

“I’m being recruited as an athlete,” said Rancifer. “I don’tcare where I play.”

Rancifer, like Yarborough, also stars in basketball andtrack.

Smith (6-3, 250) said Co-Lin head coach Glenn Davis said he willplay center for the Wolfpack. He has been a 3-year starter at BHS.He also plays defense.

“I will get more (scholarship) offers after two years atCo-Lin,” said Smith. “I’m looking forward to it.”

He wants to major in business and minor in coaching.

Lawrence Co. Signees

Two Lawrence County seniors have signed with area communitycolleges. Linebacker Julius Magee signed with Co-Lin and runningback Isiah Ferdinand signed with Southwest Mississippi.

LCHS head coach Mike Davis said Magee and Ferdinand were assetsto his program. “It’s been a pleasure to have them around for thelast four years. They are good players and good students. They areleaders.”

Magee (6-2, 245) was a leading tackler for the Cougars whofinished 10-2 and runners-up in Region 6-4A. They reached thesecond round of the state playoffs.

“Co-Lin is a good start for me and I like the coaches,” saidMagee. He plans to major in accounting.

As a senior, Magee made 79 tackles, including 58 solo stops. Herushed for 165 yards and 3 touchdowns as a fullback.

Ferdinand (5-5, 170), an elusive running back, rushed for 972yards and 10 touchdowns his senior season. He also intercepted 3passes as a defensive back.

He said he was looking forward to playing for Southwest coachCharles Anthony. “I feel really good about Southwest. It feels likehome. I want to help the Bears beat Co-Lin.”

Ferdinand said he planned to major in physical education.
