Bailey buries Lady Jackets

FLORENCE — Madison St. Joseph’s Brittany Bailey was unstoppableall season and continued her dominance Monday night in the firstround of the Division 6-2A Tournament at the McLaurin gym.

Bailey, a 5-foot-4 junior guard, pumped in a game-high 36points, including 5 treys, to power the St. Joe girls to a 53-43win over the Enterprise Lady Yellow Jackets.

In today’s girls games, Hinds AHS meets McLaurin at 4 p.m. andWesson squares off with St. Andrew’s at 7.

The Enterprise girls, coached by Jill Nations, finished theseason with a 13-16 record.

St. Joseph, coached by Keith Barnes, improved to 13-14 on theseason. The Lady Bruins play Thursday night at 4 p.m. against theNo. 1 seed Loyd Star Lady Hornets.

The third quarter was the turning point in the game. Enterprisecame out flat and St. Joe took advantage for an 11-5 run to carry a36-30 lead into the final frame. Enterprise senior forward KylieVincent’s field goal cut the deficit to 4 points, 34-30 with 35seconds left but Bailey nailed a 2-pointer with 10 seconds left topush the hosts lead to 6 points.

Enterprise senior guard Amanda Burke’s pair of free throwstrimmed the St. Joe lead to 5 points, 37-32, with 6:52 remaining inthe game. The Lady Jackets wouldn’t get closer the remainder of thegame.

Bailey fired in another trey to push the Lady Bruins’ lead to 10points, 44-34, with 4:30 left to play. Vincent netted 2 free throwswith 27 seconds in the game to cut the deficit to 7 points, 51-43.Bailey scored her final field goal with 9 seconds in the game forthe 53-43 victory.

“We had too many turnovers (23),” said Enterprise girls coachJill Nations after the loss. “We didn’t score well in the thirdquarter. We came out flat in the third quarter.”

The Lady Jackets controlled the first quarter, leading the LadyBruins 14-10. St. Joe got a couple of treys from Bailey in thesecond quarter to tie the game 25-all at halftime.

Powering Enterprise with 17 points and 5 rebounds was Vincent.Junior forward Lacey Orr finished with 10 points and led off thebackboards with 9 rebounds. Burke collected 5 points and 5rebounds.
