Davis rescues Lady Cobras

FLORENCE — When the Wesson Lady Cobras needed a big play in thefinal second of the game, sophomore forward Ann Shelby Davis camethrough in a big way.

With .01 seconds left and Wesson tied 37-37 with the St.Andrew’s Lady Saints, Davis drove underneath the goal for a fieldgoal and was fouled. After putting the Lady Cobras up 39-37, Davisadded a free throw to secure the 40-37 win Wednesday night in theDivision 6-2A Tournament being held in the McLaurin High Schoolgym.

With the win, Wesson (19-11) advances to the semifinals tonightand faces the No. 2-seeded Hinds AHS Lady Bulldogs at 7 p.m. TheNo. 1 seeded Loyd Star Lady Hornets face Madison St. Joe today at4.

St. Andrew’s, coached by former Co-Lin and Mississippi Collegeplayer Laurie Ann Davis Wyatt, finishes the season with an 8-19worksheet, her first at the helm.

In the other girls game, Hinds AHS dumped McLaurin 54- 46.

Wesson 40, St. Andrew’s 37

“It was great,’ said a smiling Davis after the win. “We didn’tcome out and play well in the third quarter.”

The 5-10 Davis finished the game with 16 points and 9rebounds.

“Ann Shelby took control of the game,” said Wesson girls coachHugh Webb. “That is what your best player is supposed to do. I waspleased with her play.”

Wesson took an 11-9 lead over St. Andrew’s in the first quarter.Ainsley Schimmel nailed a field goal and Marian Allen hit a freethrow to put the Lady Cobras up 14-9 over the Lady Saints with 6:44left in the second quarter. Wesson went on to outscore St. Andrew’s13-3 to carry a 15-point, 27-12 lead in at the half.

St. Andrew’s battled Wesson’s press in the third quarter and cutthe deficit to 33-36 going into the final frame. Lady Saintsophomore guard Ashton King nailed 2 of her 3 treys in the thirdquarter to spark their rally. King finished the game with 9points.

St. Andrew’s took advantage of several Wesson turnovers to closethe gap in the final minutes. With 23 seconds remaining in thegame, 6-foot-2 sophomore center Amy Handelman scored a field goalfor the Lady Saints that tied the game at 37-all.

“Ainsley played a good defensive game,” said Webb.”She madeseveral steals. Defensively, she played well.”

Allen netted 9 points for the Lady Cobras. Schimmel (5 steals),Macie Case and Danielle Tadlock finished with 5 points apiece.Tadlock grabbed 6 rebounds followed by Leah Greer with 4.

Adding 9 points for St. Andrew’s was Carrie Sweet.

Hinds AHS 54, McLaurin 46

Leanna Washington directed Hinds AHS with 14 points. AudrikaWebster fired in 12 points followed by Princess Thomas with 10.

McLaurin got 12 points from apiece from LaTedra Taylor andBrittany Brown.
