Fred Alcus Rushing

Memorial services for Fred Alcus Rushing, of New London, Texas,were 1 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at Tyler Memorial Cemetery. ChandlerMemorial Funeral Home in Chandler, Texas was in charge ofarrangements.

Mr. Rushing, 77, died March 7, 2008, in New London. He was bornin Brookhaven on Dec. 17, 1930.

He was a manager for Continental Trailways Co. He was of theMethodist faith and served in the U.S. Navy during the KoreanWar.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Lorena Rushing; hisdaughter, Beverly; his brothers, L.P. and Orville Rushing; and hissisters, Veloise and Willie.

Survivors are his daughter, Nancy Rutledge, of Billings, Mont.;his sister, Ann Cross, of Huntsville, Ala.; and twograndchildren.

McNair “Weed” Smith Sr.

Services for McNair “Weed” Smith Sr., of Brookhaven, are 11a.m., Monday, March 10, at Mt. Olive M.B. Church with burial in thechurch cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday from 1 until 6 p.m. at WilliamsMortuary.

Mr. Smith, 83, died March 5, 2008, at his residence. He was bornon May 10, 1924 to Joe Smith and Luvenia Wells Smith.

He was a retired bricklayer and served in the U.S. Navy duringWorld War II. He was a member of Mt. Olive Church.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his daughter, BarbaraDiana Smith; his son, Tommy Lee Sanders; his brothers, Morant,Pearlie, Tyree, Lutious, Troy, Joe Emmitt, Malco, D.D., Woodrow,Annanias, and John Wesley Smith; his sisters, Roxie Kees, DellaJackson and Gladys Barnes; and his stepfather, Ervin London.

Survivors include his sons, James E. Smith, of Chicago, Ill.,Johnny M. Smith, Charles C. Smith, the Rev. Bruce Smith and McNairSmith Jr., all of Brookhaven; his daughters, Phyllis D. Anderson,of Chicago, Vanessa Williams, of Brookhaven, Debra Tobias, of BogueChitto, and Tomora Allen, of Brookhaven; his sister, Annie PearlBradford, of Chicago; 49 grandchildren; and 52great-grandchildren.

Henryetta Kayes Townsend

Henryetta Kayes Townsend, 95, died March 7, 2008 at HospiceMinistries. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Wright& Ferguson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Townsend was born on Aug. 12, 1912 in Norfield. Sheattended Whitworth College and graduated from William Carey. Sheearned her master’s degree from the University of Virginia.

She taught special reading in the Arlington, Va. public schoolsystem. She retired in 1973, moving back to Brookhaven. She was amember of First United Methodist Church and is preceded in death byher husband, Dabney Winston Townsend Sr.

She is survived by her sons, Dabney Winston Townsend Jr., ofSavannah, Ga., and Henry Kayes Townsend, of Manassas, Va.; and hergranddaughter, Victoria Kayes Townsend.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church inBrookhaven.
