Five arrests made in Friday assault

MONTICELLO – Five arrests were made Monday night in connectionwith the Friday attack on a Lawrence County woman who was locked ina shed before her vehicle and some firearms were stolen,authorities said.

Lawrence County Sheriff Joel Thames said thanks to the jointefforts of his officers and Mississippi Bureau of Investigationofficials, the investigation finally came to a conclusion around1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

“After four days and no telling how many hours, we made fivearrests yesterday,” Thames said Tuesday morning.

Thames said authorities discovered that the two men arrested inthe direct attack on the female victim in Friday’s crime were alsoinvolved in a March 15 robbery in which they alllegedly broke intothe home of an elderly Oakvale man and stole an undisclosed amountof money.

Those arrested Monday night in connection with Friday’s incidentwere:

* LaKendrick May, 18, of 332A J.W. Jones Road, Oakdale. Chargedwith two counts of armed robbery, two counts of breaking andentering, one count of aggravated assault, one count of attemptedkidnapping and one count of sexual battery.

* Charles Buckley, 19, of 62 Arms Cemetery road, silver creek.Charged with two counts of armed robbery, two counts of breakingand entering, one count of aggravated assault, one count ofattempted kidnapping and one count of sexual battery.

* Joe Slay, 26, of 36 Rosehill Road. Charged with one count ofobstruction of justice.

* Joseph Buckley, 23, of 1012 Progress Road, Prentiss. Chargedwith accessory before the fact.

* Rondale Jones, 20, of 134 Double Pond Road, Prentiss. Chargedwith one count of receiving stolen property.

In Friday’s incident, the two men, who were wearing dark hoodedjackets and hiding their faces, allegedly came on to the victim’sproperty and beat her and locked her in a shed. The weapons takenwere her husband’s hunting guns, Thames said.

Officials said they believed the victim was known to one of herassailants.

“One of them knows of that family, though he didn’t know thempersonally,” Thames said.

Thames said initial hearings will be held this afternoon andtomorrow for the suspects.

“That’s when we would get the bond set, if a bond is set,”Thames said.

Thames also commented on the cooperative efforts of all involvedin the investigation.

“It was major cooperation with MBI in the Brookhaven districtand Hattiesburg, and approximately 10 MBI agents working around theclock with my group,” Thames said. “Working together we were ableto get the leads, and it was a joint operation that really pannedout.”
