Dr. Louie F. Wilkins

Memorial services for Dr. Louie F. Wilkins, of Brookhaven, willbe held Thursday, March 27, 2008, at 4 p.m. at Faith PresbyterianChurch with the Rev. Rob Oates officiating. Visitation will be heldfrom 1:30 p.m. until the time of service.
Dr. Wilkins was a retired physician and surgeon and a native ofJackson. He was a graduate of Hinds Community College andMississippi College. He served as a lieutenant in the United StatesAir Force for four years and was a bomber pilot. He then attendedMillsaps College as a graduate student and a lab instructor toProfessor Reiken during the interim before entering Louisiana StateUniversity Medical School. Upon graduation from medical school andinternship, he practiced medicine in Morton for four years, beforeentering surgery residency at Confederate Memorial Medical Centerin Shreveport for three years. He practiced medicine in Brookhavenfor 30 years before retiring.
Dr. Wilkins was a member of Kappa Alpha Social Fraternity, ofPhi Chi Medical Fraternity. He served as chief of staff at King’sDaughters Medical Center. He was a member of Mississippi StateMedical Association, having served in various capacities; a memberof Southern Medical Association and a member of South CentralMedical Association as president. He served on the board ofdirectors for Blue Cross-Blue Shield for 12 years. He was a memberof the International College of Surgeons and the Abdominal Surgeonsof America. He was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church and hadpreviously served as deacon at First Presbyterian Church and sangin the choir. He served as president of Brookhaven KiwanisClub.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and two daughters, LisaWilkins Assink and Patsy Lain Wilkins Pepper; his brother-in-law,Dr. Jim McLain, of Tylertown and Jackson; a sister, DorothyWilloughby, of Jackson; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, theL.R. McLains; and one brother, Bobby Wilkins.
Survivors are his wife, Diana McLain Wilkins, of Brookhaven; twodaughters; Lindy Sullenberger (Jack), of Jackson, and LouanaWilkins, of Senatobia; his son-in-law, Randy Assink (Lynda), ofRidgeland; his sister, Virginia McElhaney, of Hattiesburg; sixgrandchildren, Emily Assink Haley (Joe), of Denham Springs, La.,Alison McLain Sullenberger, of Denver, Colo., Anna Sullenberger, ofDenver, Amy Sullenberger, of Jackson (temporarily in Spainteaching), Joey Assink (Lauren), of Brookhaven, Patrick Pepper, ofHenderson, Nev.; and one great-grandchild, Presley Assink.
