Co-Lin women sweep Southwest

WESSON — The Co-Lin Lady Wolves swept a big South Divisiontwinbill from the Southwest Lady Bears Wednesday afternoon. Co-Linrallied to win the opener 4-1 and put away Southwest 5-1 in thefinale.
The 17-8 Lady Wolves, coached by Allen Kent, visits Gulf CoastSaturday for more division action. The first game of thedoubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
The Southwest women are coached by Patsy Sandifer.
“These were two big wins for us, closing out the first round ofdivision play,” said Kent. “We are now 6-2 and lead Gulf Coast andPearl River by one game.
“We have won six our our last seven, so we just need to keep itgoing as we travel to defending State and Regional Champion GulfCoast on Saturday.”
Co-Lin 4, Southwest 1
The Lady Bears scratched for an unearned run in the top of thefirst, including a bunt single for their only run in the game.
Co-Lin came back with 2 runs in the bottom of the first. Thirdbaseman Meleah Brown drew a leadoff walks and stole second base.Second baseman Kayla Crochet singled to left and advance to secondon the throw home. Shortstop Ashley Sykes singled to drive in Brownand Crochet.
In the fourth, Devon Welch and Emily Langley hit 2 back-to-backsingles. Becca Boone walked to load the bases. Missy Paulina drewan RBI base-on-balls.
Fifth inning action saw Crochet walk and score on Bailey singleto left field.
Becca Bailey (6-3) was the winning pitcher, hurling a 1 hitterwith 8 strikeouts and 1 walk.
“Bailey really shut them down and we needed the win,” addedKent.
Singling for the Lady Wolves was Rebecca Rousseau.
Heather Wehrs absorbed the loss.
Co-Lin 5, Southwest 1
Following a scoreless first, Bailey singled and Amber Bowmancame in as a pinch runner. Bowman stole second. Langley dropped abunt singled and stole second. Sykes singled to center for a 2RBIand later scored on an illegal pitch.
In the third, Bailey and Langley connected for back-to-backsingles. Sykes ripped a single to left and 2 runs scored on aSouthwest error.
Southwest scored an unearned run in the seventh before Crochethurled the victory. Right fielder Chelsey Miller threw out KeriPrestridge at first base after a sharp hopper to Miller to end thegame.
“It was a good heads up, hustling play by Miller,” statedKent.
Sykes had 2 hits and 3 RBI for the Lady Wolves. Bailey andLangley each had 2 hits and scored twice. Missy Paulina doubled.Singling were Ashley Jones and Becca Boone.
Crochet (6-1) scattered 7 hits, struck out 8 batters and walked2.
Absorbing the loss was Catherine West.
