Wenger, Vargas 1-2 overall

Texans David Wenger and Carlos Vargas finished 1-2 Overall inthe Seventh Annual MS Gran Prix Bicycle Races held in LincolnCounty this past weekend. Mathew Davis of Shreveport, La. was thirdoverall, followed by Matt Winstead of Huntsville, Ala. and BainFoote of New Orleans, who was riding for local favorite HerringGas.

Wenger, from Austin, Texas, was riding for Super Squadra. He wonthe time trial and was second in Saturday’s 78-mile road race.

Vargas, a Columbian living in Kingwood, Texas, for the lastseven years, rides for Team Hotel San Jose’ He won the SeniorCategory 1-2-3 road race and was fourth in the circuit race.

Friday night’s Bank of Brookhaven Downtown Criterium wascanceled when rain caused the race route to become too slick. Raceofficials determined that there was too much danger, noting theextreme slippery conditions caused by automobile emissions, plusthe painted stripes on the streets.

A record turnout of 240 riders from as far away as Arizona andFlorida competed for prize money. Tony Scott of Team One, Ga. wasthe overall winner in Masters 35-+. John McLauchin of Marx andBensdorf, Tenn. was runner-up.

The overall senior 4 category went to Pat Allison of GS MontagnaRossa. The overall winner in the women’s division was Shannon Kochwho ridEs for Metro Volksagon. Andrea Wilson of Team Kendra Tirewas second and Mississippian Debbie Milne of Pro Bike Cyclling wasthird.

Winning the Junior Division was Andrew Hammond of Mississippiwho rides for Pro Bike Cyclling.

In the overall Category 5/public, Chris Allison was first andJonathan Falgout was runner-up.
