WESSON — Pearl River Community College’s Wildcats brought theirlong-distance calling cards to Sullivan Stadium Wednesday afternoonin Game 1 of their South Division baseball doubleheader withCopiah-Lincoln Community College. The Wildcats sacked 4 home runsin their 7-6 come-from-behind win over the Wolves.

In the nightcap, the Wolfpack went long-distance on a grand-slamhomer by sophomore Timmy Foster to garner the split with a 8-5win.

Co-Lin moves to 26-21 overall and 9-5 in South Division play.Pearl River falls to 30-16 and 13-3.

Co-Lin closes out the regular season Saturday at Gulf Coast inPerkinston. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. The Wolves andBulldogs are tied for second place in the South and Co-Lin needsone victory in the twinbill to reach the state tournament.

Pearl River 7, Co-Lin 6

The Wolves jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first. MontezChatman and Steven Gauthe collected base hits. Foster reached on afielder’s choice that scored Chatman. Josh Coone singled to loadthe bases. Jordan Toney’s base hit would plate Gauthe. Paul Daviswalked to score Foster. Taebyus Smith grounded into a fielder’schoice that scored Coone.

The Wildcats began their comeback in the second, cutting theirdeficit in half at 4-2. Catcher Michael Diaz drilled a solo homer.With 1 out, Tristan Rogers singled and moved to second on a Nortonwalk. Abed Santana walked to load the bases. Zack Tisdale’s RBIsingle scored Rogers.

Co-Lin, under the direction of Coach Keith Case, scored twice inthe second to extend the lead to 6-2. With 1 out, Chatman reached,as he was hit by a pitch. He stole second and third; later scoringon a throwing error by Pearl River. With 2 outs, Foster doubled andlater scored by stealing home.

Pearl River, coached by Jimmy McMann, went to the calling cardsin the third. Nick Smith walked. On a 2-2 pitch, Ethan Burtlaunched blast over the left field fence. Two batters later, SethEdwards tripled and later scored on Rogers’ sacrifice fly. TheWildcats trailed 6-5.

McMann’s ballclub got pair of solo homers from Smith and Santanain the fourth.

Wolfpack starter Trent Hartzog was relieved by Brock Campbell,prior to Santana’s 4-bagger. Campbell (1-1) would suffer the lossin 4-plus innings of relief, allowing 1 earned run on 3 hits, witha walk and 5 strikeouts.

“Trent (Hartzog) had a tough outing,” said Coach Case. “Brock(Campbell) pitched well. We just could not get the key hits, whenwe needed them.”

Kyle Lindsey (8-1) got the win in relief of starter KodyLancaster for the Wildcats. He allowed no runs on 4 hits; walking 2and striking out 5.

Co-Lin 8, Pearl 5

Co-Lin duplicated its efforts from Game 1 with 6 runs in thefirst 2 innings, claiming a 6-0 lead.

In the first, Chatman walked, moved to second on a fielder’schoice and stole third. Foster’s base hit scored Chatman, thenstole second. Coone’s single scored Foster.

In the second, James Antoon, Chatman and Gauthe hit consecutivesingles to set the stage for Foster’s base-clearing blast. Fosterwould finish the day with 6 RBIs.

“Foster had a good game with those 6 RBIs and the homer,”commented Coach Case.

The Wolves got single runs from Gauthe (fourth) and Paul Davis(fifth), but the Wildcats would not go away quietly.

The Wildcats got run support from Burt in the sixth. In theseventh, trailing 8-3, Pearl River would get a 2-run homer fromSmith, that also scored catcher Alex Riser.

Wolfpack starter Brandt Hinton struck out Burt to end the game.Hinton (6-3), a sophomore from Brookhaven, went the distance to getthe win, fanning 9 Wildcat batters with no walks. He gave up 5earned runs on 9 hits.

“Brandt had a great performance tonight,” Case said. “Hecomleted out there and he did not give up.”

Pearl River used 4 pitchers in the game. Starter Chase Ezellwould suffer the loss in 1 2/3 innings. He allowed 5 earned runs on4 hits with 2 walks and a strikeout. Will Mann, Cody Jordan andCorbin Blaize each made an relief appearance.
