Gulf Coast knocks Co-Lin out of state tourney slot

PERKINSTON — Pitcher Tyler Henry gave up 6 hits, struck out 9and walked 2 Monday, directing the Mississippi Gulf Coast CommunityCollege Bulldogs to a 4-0 shutout against Co-Lin and landing aberth in the MACJC State Baseball Tournament. A 3-run eighth-inningbroke the game open in a tight pitching duel between Henry andCo-Lin hurler Brandt Hinton.

Until the bottom of the eighth it was a great pitching duelbetween Brandt and Henry,” said Co-Lin head coach Keith Case.”Brandt pitched a great game.

“We left eight runners on base, five in scoring position,” Caseadded. “We couldn’t get a hit when we needed it.”

On the mound, Hinton went 8 innings. He gave up 7 hits and 4runs, only 1 of them earned. He struck out 4 and walked 1.

The Bulldogs scored once in the first. Leadoff batter JerronCasey reached on a drag bunt. The next batter was safe on athrowing error. Jacob Daniel lofted a sacrifice fly to score Caseyfor a 1-0 lead.

In the eighth, Bo Bell doubled. Jeremy Davis delivered an RBIsingle Jacob Daniel followed with a 2-run homer.

Sophomore shortstop Steven Gauthe’ collected 3 hits for theWolves.

Co-Lin finishes 27-23. Gulf Coast (29-22) advances to the statetournament at Itawamba in Fulton, starting Thursday. The Bulldogsalso qualify for the regional.

Co-Lin split with Gulf Coast Saturday to force a third game.Saturday’s twinbill was delayed by rain and made it a 10-hour dayfor the Wolves at Perkinston.

Lady Wolves In Action

The Co-Lin women’s softball team, coached by Allen Kent, meetsGulf Coast today at 4 p.m., in the championship finals of the statesoftball tournament at Clinton High School. Co-Lin is unbeaten inthe double-elimination tournament and leads the Lady Bulldogs 1-0in the first inning. The Lady Wolves beat Gulf Coast 2-0 inFriday’s semifinals.

Saturday’s heavy rainfall postponed the title game untiltoday.
