MONTICELLO – A Friday night wreck near Sontag that claimed thelife of a Lawrence County High School student and injured sevenothers is still under investigation, said Lawrence County SheriffJoel Thames.

Authorities have not yet determined the driver of a 1993 SaturnXL2 that struck two trees at the intersection of B. F. Davis Roadand Smith Ferry Road at approximately 10:30 p.m. Friday night.Fifteen-year-old Megan Bass was killed in the accident.

Thames said the sheriff’s department has received conflictingreports from the seven other passengers who were in the car.

“The investigation is still pending on who the driver was,” hesaid. “We haven’t been able to talk to everyone involved in theaccident.”

The department has not yet been in contact with all thoseinvolved – six males and two females – because all but one,19-year-old Galen Daughdrill, of Sontag, were taken to hospitalsfor injuries received in the crash. Dusty Sills, 23, of Sontag;Jeremy Sill, 17, of Sontag, Austin Lambert, 15, of Sontag; TaylorMartin, 15, of Sontag, Thomas Vincent, 16, of Sontag; and MeganStuckey, 16, of New Hebron, were all taken in for treatment. Thamessaid four of the group were airlifted to University Medical Centerin Jackson, two were transported to Southwest Mississippi RegionalMedical Center in McComb and one was taken to the Lawrence CountyHospital.

As of Sunday afternoon, the four UMC transports remained inintensive care, Thames said.

Thames said alcohol was a factor in the crash, but the sheriff’sdepartment is still awaiting the results of toxicology reports.

“Hopefully, we can know for sure who the driver was,” hesaid.

Thames also said charges could be brought against the driver ofthe vehicle – whoever it was – because of the number of passengersin the vehicle.

“Any type of activity that is unsafe would be considered acareless operation of a vehicle,” he said. “Naturally, if you havetoo many people in a vehicle and the operator can’t have fullcontrol of the vehicle, it definitely would be illegal.”
