A West Lincoln Attendance Center student was killed in a one-caraccident in Lawrence County about three miles from his mother’shome Monday evening, officials said.
Lawrence County Coroner Sydney Fortenberry said DustinDelaughter, 15, lost control of his mother’s Mercury Sable as hewas traveling westbound on Divide Road a few minutes after 6 p.m.Monday.
Undersheriff Willie Wallace said the vehicle flipped andDelaughter was thrown from the vehicle.
“Best we can determine, he was on a county road and came into acurve and lost control, and car flipped and it ejected him,” saidWallace.
Wallace said the accident may have been caused by Delaughter’snot being terribly familiar with the road, as he lived with hisfather in Lincoln County. Delaughter would have been a sophomorethis year at West Lincoln.
“I know he visited his mom quite a bit, but him not knowingthose roads probably like he should have, he probably lostcontrol,” Wallace said. “It’s so sad. He was so young.”
Delaughter is the son of Selina Lawrence of 17 Robbins Road,Jayess, and Leroy Delaughter Jr. of Lincoln County.
Wilson Funeral Home in Monticello will be handling the funeral.Arrangements are incomplete.
