MHP trooper injured in accident on interstate

Mississippi Highway Patrol Trooper officials say a trooperinvolved in an accident on Interstate 55 in Pike County Tuesdayafternoon is sore, but resting at home today.

Troop M Public Affairs officer Rusty Boyd said Trooper LukeHarrington was traveling north on I-55 Tuesday at 2:29 p.m. when heattempted to turn around to catch a violator in the southboundlane.

Boyd said as Harrington pursued the violator, a silver Corvettewith Texas plates changed lanes and moved in front of him. To avoidthe collision, Boyd said, Harrington ran into the median.

“He couldn’t get the vehicle stopped and he struck an embankmentand went airborne for a short time and then struck a tree,” Boydsaid.

Harrington’s vehicle came to rest in a creek, Boyd said.

The trooper was able to free himself from the car and get to thecreek bank, where he waited for emergency officials to arrive onthe scene. He was taken to Southwest Mississippi Medical Centerwith moderate injuries, Boyd said.

Harrington was treated and released later that day.

Harrington, who has been a trooper for around three years, waswearing a seat belt. His vehicle was a total loss as a result ofthe incident, which Boyd said was a good reason for him to rest upfor a few days.

“I know he’s sore, he can’t hardly move this morning,” Boyd saidWednesday.
