Shooting leaves man in critical condition

A Brookhaven man is reportedly in critical condition at theUniversity of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson after he wasshot at a local gas station Friday night.

Brookhaven Police Department Capt. Bobby Bell said Chad Moak,28, of Brookhaven, was shot by someone he knew at the A One Stop at313 Industrial Park Road around 8:45 p.m. Friday. Authorities andwitnesses said the situation started off as a casual encounterbetween the two men.

“We don’t yet know all the details of just what happened,” Bellsaid. “He (Moak) knew the subject that assaulted him.”

Witnesses said Moak was speaking with his alleged attacker in theparking lot of the convenience store when the man shot him in thechest area in front of his girlfriend and children before fleeingthe scene.

Several witnesses were on scene at the time of the shooting,including a co-worker of Moak’s. Two women identified by policeofficers as nurses helped keep Moak responsive until an ambulancearrived.

Bell said police have not yet located the attacker, but they doknow his identity.

“We don’t have a lead on where he is, but we do know the suspect,”he said.

Bell said the situation between Moak and his attacker was anisolated event. People in the neighborhood and customers to thestore do not need to be alarmed, he said.

“This is a random incident,” said Bell, adding that police have notyet determined a motive for the shooting.

Moak was taken from the scene by ambulance to King’s DaughtersMedical Center and later airlifted to UMC. Bell said his familymembers had told police he is resting in critical condition at UMCSaturday.
