Police: Second arrest made in Wednesday night shooting

Brookhaven police have made another arrest in conjunction withthe Wednesday night shooting death of a Monticello man.

Brookhaven Police Chief Pap Henderson said Tony CornellHumphrey, 28, of 1040 Highway 550, was arrested Thursday night andcharged in connection with the shooting death of William Ard Jr.,25, of John Peyton Lane in Monticello.

Kelcay Anthony Humphrey, 19, of 706 Earls Trail, was arrestedearly Thursday morning and charged with murder. Lincoln County Jailrecords show Tony Humphrey also was charged with murder.

Henderson said the investigation continues, and that hisdepartment will be able to release more details as they unfold.

“We can’t give anything out right now,” he said Friday morning.”We’ll be questioning Tony Humphrey this afternoon.”

After the arrest of Kelcay Humphrey, police had indicated theremight be other suspects. Henderson said whether or not more arrestswill be made is yet to be determined.

“It all depends on what we find out this afternoon,” hesaid.

Ard was found dead, shot in the back Wednesday night inside 57Cloverdale. Henderson said Ard appeared to have been shot once inthe back.

Initial reports indicated Ard had been staying at the Cloverdaleresidence.

However, Ard’s mother Gladys Magee said Friday her son’schildren and their mother lived at the Cloverdale residence and hewould go to visit them. She said her son had a Brookhaven addressof 603 Beauregard St.

A connection between Ard and the shooter has not beenestablished. Police say a motive is not clear.

Ard’s body was sent to the state crime lab for autopsy.
