Co-Lin ready for season opener

WESSON – Coach Glenn Davis and his Copiah-Lincoln CommunityCollege Wolfpack are ready to kick off their 2008 season. Tee timearrives Thursday night when they invade Scooba to play the EastMississippi Community College Lions. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

Davis, starting his fifth campaign, wants to put Co-Lin back inthe South Division title chase after going 3-6 last season. ThePack won’t see a South Division foe until the third week of theseason, playing their first two games on the road against NorthDivision teams.

“Our kids are ready to play,” said Davis. “They are excitedabout it . We hope we covered everything.” in practice.

” Hopefully we will play smart and play with emotion,” Daviscontinued. “We want to play well on offense and defense. This is afun group to work with.”

EMCC is an unknown since the Lions have a new head coach inBuddy Stephens. He replaced Roger Carr who posted a 4-5 record lastyear. The Lions were the top scoring team in 2007.

Stephens was the offensive coordinator at Pearl River CommunityCollege last year. EMCC’s new defensive coordinator also comes fromPearl River.

“East Mississippi has a new coach,” said Davis. “I think theyhave seven coaches on their staff. Their administration has beenvery supportive.They have a good area to recruit.”

Top returnees for the Lions are quarterback Randall McKay (5-11,190, soph.) of Port Sulphur, La., and wide receiver Mike Outlaw(5-11, 190, soph.) of Starkvlle. On defense, the leaders aretackles Leslie Stirrups (6-3, 275, soph.) of Tampa, Fla. and ClaudeDavis (6-5, 250, fr.) of Lakeland, Fla.

Davis said the following players will start for Co-Lin tomorrownight. At running back is Ronnie McNulty (5-9, 180. soph.) ofBrookhaven. The quarterback is Micah Davis (6-1, 180, soph.) ofWesson.

Jeremy Sutton (5-8, 170, soph.) of Brandon, Jason Bruce (5-10,165, soph.) of Natchez and Damien Allen (6-1, 180, fr.) of Orlando,Fla. are at wide receiever. Ken Adams (6-5, 245, fr.) ofEnterprise, Ala., is the tight end.

Starting in the offensive line are Abre Leggins (6-4, 310,soph.) of Orlando, Fla. at left tackle, Ian Burnett (6-1, 275,soph.) of Southaven at left guard, Darion Smith (6-2, 260, fr.) ofBrookhaven at center, Joe Collins (6-2, 270, fr.) of Madison atright guard and Chris Payne (6-3, 325, soph.) of Vicksburg at righttackle.

Defensive Lineup

On defense, Josh Tillman (6-4, 255, fr.) of Meadville andWilfred Journett (6-2, 255, soph.) of Lafayette, La., are at end,Jarron McCormick (6-3, 235, soph.) of Ellisville and Nick Fairly(6-4, 300, fr.) of Mobile, Ala. are at tackle.

The linebackers are Bo Harris (6-3, 225, soph.) of Conyars, Ga,Willie Bass (6-0, 200, soph.) of Mendenhall and Greg Norwood (5-11,225, fr.) of Madison

Co-Lin’s secondary includes Dequan Menzie (6-0, 185, fr.) ofColumbus, Ga., and Lionel Stokes (5-10, 170, fr.) of Columbia atcornerback, Andrew Magee (6-1, 185, soph.) of Magee at strongsafety and Charles (Bobo) Rancifer (6-2, 205, fr.) of Brookhaven atfree safety.

The punter and kicker is Tyler Fitzgerald (6-2, 230, fr.) ofFlorence. The long snapper is Daniel Herrington (5-10, 180, soph.)of Magee.

Wolf Tails: Co-Lin hasn’t played EMCC since 2006 when the Wolvesbeat the Lions 35-12 en route to a 9-3 record and the SouthDivision championship. The Wolves lost 21-20 to Pearl River in thestate championship game. Co-Lin later shut out Georgia Military21-0 in the Golden Isles Classic held in Brunswick, Ga.
