Lady ‘Cats nip Ole Brook 3-2

The Bogue Chitto Lady ‘Cats spoiled Senior Night for theBrookhaven Lady Panthers at the Lady Panther Softball Complex. In adefensive struggle, the Lady ‘Cats escaped with a 3-2 win over theLady Panthers Tuesday night in slowpitch softball action.

With the win by the Lady ‘Cats, they improve to 15-10 overall.Brookhaven fell to 14-11.

Both teams have their final dress rehearsals before the playoffsbegin next Tuesday. Brookhaven travels to Warren Central Thursdayin a single varsity game, beginning at 5:30. Bogue Chitto hostsFranklin County for single varsity game Thursday at 5.

Bogue Chitto, runner-up in Division 7-1A, opens the South 1Aplayoffs at East Webster. Brookhaven will travel to eitherD’Iberville or Vancleave to open the South 4A playoffs afterfinishing runner-up to Lawrence County in the division race. Theplayoffs are a best-of-three series at the host school.

Lady Panther head coach Lisa Covington, along with assistantsChad Walker, Mandy Vinson and Ronnie Hart, recognized seniorsHannah Lowman, Karlee Martin, Casey Risher, Sabrina Delaughter,Brianna Ashmore and Brittany Bateman in pregame ceremonies. Eachplayer was presented with gifts from family members orteammates.

Both teams exhibited some outstanding defensive plays, thusrealizing the low-scoring affair. Even though each team committed apair of miscues, it would be Bogue Chitto who would get the runswhen they needed them.

“Our hitting was very inconsistent tonight,” said Bogue Chittohead coach Scott Leggett. “We would get something started, then getshut down.”

Ole Brook would get their first and only lead of the game in thethird at 1-0. Erica Bridwell walked. Bateman’s ground-out movedBridwell to second. Lowman and Martin hit consecutive singles toload the bases and Martin’s base hit scored Bridwell.

Bogue Chitto ordered a pair of run in the fourth, taking a 2-1lead. Corner basemen Amanda Owen (first) and Holly Miller (third)hit back-to-back base hits. Pitcher Blaine Myers doubled to scoreOwen. Rightfielder Chris May’s single plated Holly Miller.

In the fifth, the Lady ‘Cats extended their advantage to 3-1.Darcy Miller singled and moved to third on Kelli Howard’s double.Josie Porter reached on a Lady Panther miscue that allowed Miller,who led Bogue Chitto with 3 singles, to score.

The Lady Panthers’ rally came up short in the seventh. SarahAyers singled, but was thrown out at first following a single byAshmore. Catcher Christen Benson doubled. Pinch hitter Erica Leniorsingled to load the bases. Bateman’s sacrifice fly to right-centerfield scored Ashmore. Ole Brook grounded out to end the game.

“We had a chance to win,” said Coach Covington. “Now we justhave to regroup and get ready for the playoffs.”

Martin led the Lady Panthers with 2 base hits. Benson singledand doubled.

Lending support for Bogue Chitto was Howard with a pair ofdoubles. Holly Miller singled twice.

Myers authored the win for the Lady ‘Cats, while Ashmoresuffered the loss for the Lady Panthers.

In the JV game, Bogue Chitto posted an 8-4 win over Brookhaven.The Lady ‘Cats got base hits from Adrienne Wallace, Rheagan Welch,Hailey Estess, Heather Miller, Shelby Tobias, Shelby Crosby, KaylieCrosby, Adrienne Hall (2) and Alexis Givens. Welch doubled.

For the Lady Panthers, collecting singles were Erica Lenior,Olivia Jett, Carey Crozier, Shareeka Hill, Rashana Stewart (2) andHeather Daw.
